Dear Son, I embrace the present opportunity of writing you a few lines which will inform you that we are all in common health at this time except Mary and she is very unwell this morning complaining with a pain in (the) head and back. I (am) fearful (that) she is taking the fever. Neighbors (are) generally well. I got a letter from Ben yesterday and he was well. His letter was wrote the 5th of this month. He is at camps near Richmond and was in that fight and says that they left Yorktown the 4th of May and that he has been in a battle nearly every week since the first of March and he has not been hurt, but he can't tell what will be done tomorrow. He says that he got some of his messmates killed in the fight John Simpson and J. Franklin and M. Jones. He says that they had 90 killed and wounded in his regiment. I got a letter from Isabelle about 10 days ago. She was well then and Ben's wife and children. I have nothing new to write to you. The weather is dry and our crops are suffering very much for rain. Write to me as soon as you get this and let me know how you are coming on.
Yours in Haste
J.C. Harrison to His Son
Wm. D. Harrison
I have not had any letter from Wm. Harden since he went to camps at Mobile. Old Father Graham and Amy Brown is married and Brother Huggins and Mary Brown are also married and Wm. J. Brown was the sir (?). If you Southern boys don't make haste and whip the Yankees and come home, I don't know what the girls will do for the old widowers just pounce on them like a duck on a June bug.
Martha A. Harrison
Forwarded by the politeness of John King
