         DATE:  October 27th, 1863

   Dear Wife,

  (I) write you a few lines which will inform you that I am well at this time, hoping  that this letter may come safe to hand and find you and the children enjoying the same blessings of God.  I have nothing that will interest you at the present.  We had a general review yesterday and had a short speech from the President Davis and we saluted him last night with torches and large fires and he said that time was not far distant when we all might return, turn to our homes in peace and quiet.  There are some sickness in our regiment.  Bad colds and running (noses? diarhea?).  We lost one man in our company last night. He died (of) pneumonia.  His name is Moshing.  His father lives somewhere about Gravel Hill, but he(Moshing) lives in Willcox County.  You wrote to me that you had the house almost full of peas.  I want all you can.  I want you to put me up a flour sack of potatos and get Mr Chandeler (to) mail them to Pollard in care of Captain Pinckard, 55th Alabama Regiment Volunteers Company A and tell buddy to dig his ground peas (peanuts) and put them in a little sack in my potatos and (I) will sell them and send him the money for I can get 30 cents per quart for them.  I want you to send my clothing as soon as you get the chance  for (I) need them very bad.  Dig my cane as soon as you can and get someone to build you a good chimney for it (is) going to be cold weather.  Give my best respects to all inquiring friends and keep a double portion to yourself.
